Theodor Herzl

Theodor Herzl (1860-1904) is known as the father of modern political Zionism.

Attempts at peace 1996-2003

In May 1996 Benjamin Netanyahu became prime minister in Israel, and his government promoted expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories, against the spirit of the Oslo Accords.




Attempts at peace 1977-1995

In November 1977 the Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat offered Israel permanent peace and recognition of their nation if Israel withdrew from the occupied territories, including Arab Jerusalem, and agreed to a Palestinian state.
