Vapor. How fleeting and temporary vapor is.
While I was driving through the countryside the other day, I noticed a field that had been recently plowed, and over the newly overturned soil hung a thin, low layer of steam in the crisp morning air. A short time later as I was driving home again I passed the same field, and saw that all the steam had evaporated, and there was not a hint of vapor in the air any longer. It made me think of the Bible verse where it is written that our life is like a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
Life is short
Thousands of years ago, God formed the earth and created man to live on it. Think about all the stories we read, both in the Bible and in history books, about people who have lived here—generations upon generations who came and went throughout thousands of years. Imagine if you drew a time-line starting with creation, and ending with the present year. Each life that was lived along the way would be a tiny speck on that time-line, including mine and yours!
Possibly God has given you 70, 80, maybe even 90 or more years to live, or maybe far fewer—none of us know the number of our days. In the whole picture of time, in any case, we have only a very short time to live. Many, many people who have used their time aimlessly, selfishly seeking the pleasures the world offers or giving into anxiety and demands, come to nothing of eternal value once their days are fulfilled, and they leave the earth like a candle being snuffed out, or like a vapor that quickly dissipates into the air without leaving a trace behind.
An eternal vision
“You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” James 4:14 What, then, is the point and purpose of my life? How heavy it is to live without a vision and a hope of something better! “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.” John 14:1 Then Jesus says that He is preparing a place for us so we can be where He is for all eternity! How very crucial it is for us to really believe this, so in the days and years we have left, we are zealous to please our Creator. Then our life can be like a candle that shines brighter and brighter until the perfect day!
