... thought Gabriëlle (63) when she came into contact with Brunstad Christian Church. She had met so many warm, loving, caring people that it made her downright discouraged. Even though that was more than 20 years ago, she still vividly remembers how she felt.
The only thing you need to do is to yield completely to God; He will work with you right where you are. You don’t need to worry about what other people think of you.
“I figured that I wasn’t capable of being like them. Quite simply, I did not love people that much. I didn’t think that I would be able to manage to live this life, so I stopped attending the meetings. But there was one person who continued faithfully writing to me. She sent me two postcards every single week. At one point I wrote and told her that I no longer attended meetings because I could not be like the others. The reply I received from her changed everything, ‘But you don’t need to! The only thing you need to do is to yield completely to God; He will work with you right where you are. You don’t need to worry about what other people think of you.’ In that moment, light dawned and it became clear to me. I saw a direction I could pursue in life, and decided to start attending meetings again. I sensed that I became relaxed inside.”
Hearing this coming from Gabriëlle was a new experience for me. She is one of the warmest, most loving, caring, and personable people I know. One evening we talked about this again; about how God has guided her life; and about the help she has received in her life, in her circumstances, and through conversations with other people. She remembers well when someone said to her that she herself could choose not to give any nourishment to sin – the bad thoughts that arise. Whatever does not receive any nourishment will die. It is not difficult to become a warm, caring and loving person, because it is God who is forming you into someone like that.
What a joy it is, not only to know, but also to experience that it is true that God forms us, through our circumstances in life, into the unique people whom He wishes us to become.
