The spirit of the times promises freedom by breaking the commandments, but the gospel promises freedom by keeping the commandments of Christ.
Obedience has been a central part of the preaching of the church right from the beginning. In this message, Kåre J. Smith explains how we receive God’s power in our lives through obedience to the commandments.
To love God is to keep His commandments.
Smith begins by reading in 1 John 5 “… By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.”
Further on he explains that Jesus came to earth to teach us the will of God and give us power to keep His commandments. God does not reduce these commandments – a lawless gospel and a terrible deceit! We must do His will, Smith continues, and explains further that Jesus’ intention for us is to make us into a law-abiding people.
Slave your way to freedom
For many, the commandments seem like bondage in the beginning, but Smith exhorts us to let it be bondage, but still to be obedient to the law. Then you will fall short, because no one can manage it in their own strength. But when you come to the point where you recognize that there dwells no good thing in your flesh, then things start to become brighter. It is the sin within us that makes us fall short, says Smith, and encourages us to a wholehearted battle against sin.
“Be a first commandment Christian - that means that you love God with all your soul, with all your strength, with all your heart! Then I can assure you that God will come to your aid!” concludes Smith.
