In Heb 4:16 we are urged to come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Of course we need grace for forgiveness when we sin, but think to receive grace in time of temptation so that we don't sin! Is this really possible? Yes indeed! We have a great High Priest who "was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin". He can sympathize with our weaknesses because in all things He was made like His brethren. He Himself has suffered, being tempted, so He is able to aid those who are tempted. (Heb 2:17-18). He strengthens us and helps us to suffer in the flesh in the time of temptation rather than to give in to its demands. "Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin." (1 Pet 4:1.)
These are really glad tidings. We don’t need to continue to give into sin; instead we can get grace to overcome. It’s only a question of whether we really believe in the Jesus we read about in Hebrews chapters 2 and 4.
If we acknowledge our sin and have a sincere need and longing to become free from it, we can come to the throne of grace with great boldness. There, our great High Priest, who knows our weaknesses and who ever lives to make intercession for us, is ready and waiting to give us all the help we need to overcome.
