How to receive the Holy Spirit? Yes, this is a question that should be of greatest interest to all those who want to live a happy life, a life that pleases God, a clean and victorious life.
The apostle Paul asks the Galatians concerning receiving the Holy Spirit: “Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?” Gal. 3:2. He knew very well that they would answer that they received the Holy Spirit “By the hearing of faith”.
Receive the Holy Spirit by “drinking” the Word of faith
The Word and the Spirit cannot be separated. This reminds us of what Paul writes in Romans 10, namely, that Christ is near us when the Word is close to us, in our hearts and in our mouths. And also when he writes that the word of God works powerfully in those who believe.
Furthermore, the apostle writes that, “We … have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” (1 Cor. 12:13) Drink! That was a simple way to express it, that we can easily understand: drink. Yes, that's exactly what we do when we hear faith being preached. But we must also consciously “drink”.
Let us use an example of receiving the Holy Spirit by “drinking” the Word of faith. Two young friends are sitting in a church service where true faith is being preached. One of them sits there, thinking about what he will do to entertain himself after the meeting. The other sits there with his ears wide open, both his natural ears and ears of his heart. It is obvious that the first one isn’t drinking the Spirit that is in the Word of faith. The other one is touched by what he or she hears and is filled with the Spirit of faith, with God's Holy Spirit.
Receive the Holy Spirit by obedience of faith
Many people almost expect a rush of feelings when they think of being filled with the Spirit. But God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him, says the Scripture (Acts 5:32). It is therefore primarily a matter of obedience, the obedience of faith. In a letter to someone who had difficulty understanding the subject of Spirit, Johan Oscar Smith [the founder of Brunstad Christian Church, ed.'s note] writes: “Live in the Spirit, believe in the Spirit, pray in the Spirit, battle against the flesh in the Spirit, and in every way be obedient to the Spirit. Then you have the Spirit.” That was a clear message about how to receive the Holy Spirit! Live, believe, pray, battle and be obedient. And let us drink of the Spirit and fill ourselves with the Spirit when faith is preached.
